These Engine Noises Mean a Problem With the European Vehicle’s Engine

Head straight to our shop or have your European automobile towed if the engine is making any of the following sounds. These noises can be an indication of a serious engine problem underneath the hood. It is better to avoid damaging the engine further by having the noise examined right away.

Grinding

For example, if your European automobile’s engine is grinding, you may not have any motor oil circulating through it. The engine may also grind if the water pump is wearing out. Finally, you may hear grinding or whining if the alternator is going bad.

Hissing

A hissing engine is a sign that there is a leaking vacuum hose that needs to be replaced. You may also have a fluid leak. The fluid will make a hissing or squealing sound when it drips onto hot engine parts. If coolant is leaking, your engine may also overheat.

Knocking

Knocking noises can be a sign that you put the wrong fuel in the tank. For example, if your European automobile needs fuel with an octane rating of 92, anything lower will make the engine knock. Worn rod bearings can also make the pistons knock against the cylinder walls.

Popping

The exhaust system can make popping or tapping noises when it is leaking. Specifically, the parts that can make these noises include the exhaust manifold, the muffler, and the exhaust manifold gasket. You may also hear popping noises coming from the catalytic converter.

Roaring

Speaking of the catalytic converter and the muffler, your engine in the European automobile will roar if there is a problem with either part. In the case of the catalytic converter, a roaring engine signals that it is missing. In the case of the muffler, a roaring engine means it needs to be replaced.

Squealing

Finally, squealing sounds generally come from one of the engine’s belts. The most common belt that makes the squealing sound is the serpentine or accessory belt. It’s possible that the belt needs to be replaced. In other cases, we may need to replace the tensioner.
